A Black Country fertility clinic has become one of the first to boost the baby hopes of young women with cancer through a revolutionary new egg freezing treatment.
Midland Fertility Services(MFS), in Aldridge, has announced it will be the first in the West Midlands and one of the first in the UK to offer egg vitrification, which uses the latest flash-freezing method to preserve eggs.
Managers of the clinic, which treats NHS and private patients, believe it could increase the chance of future motherhood for women diagnosed with cancer, who are often left with problems getting pregnant after enduring chemo and radiotherapy.
The most exhaustive study yet of children born after the freezing procedure found that they appeared to be as healthy as those conceived normally.
Dr Gillian Lockwood, medical director of MFS, said: “A young cancer patient in a long-term relationship may choose to have IVF fertility treatment to retrieve some of her eggs.”
