The manager of a popular late-night greasy spoon in Birmingham will stand trial for grievous bodily harm after an incident which left 13 people injured.

The cafe’s boss Mahbubur Rhaman, 39, of Cole Valley Road, Hall Green, and a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.

Both defendants were charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm in relation to two customers who allegedly suffered the most severe injuries. Police were called to Mr Egg in Hurst Street, opposite the Hippodrome Theatre in Birmingham city centre, at around 2.10am on Sunday, November 29.

When they arrived a number of customers were complaining about burning to the face after allegedly being sprayed with a substance.

One 20-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious burns.

The pair, who will appear at Birmingham Crown Court on March 9 for a pretrial hearing, were released on bail.
