A woman from Birmingham has appeared before magistrates charged with murdering her three-year-old daughter.

Alia Jama was found dead in Erdington at a house containing a hazardous substance.

Alia's mother Iman Yousef, 24, spoke only to confirm her name, address and date-of-birth at Sutton Coldfield Magistrates' Court.

Yousef was charged on Tuesday night with murdering Alia, who was found dead in Milverton Road, Erdington, on Saturday.

The defendant, who gave her address as Milverton Road, was remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.

West Midlands Police said officers still do not know what the dangerous substance found at the property is.

A police spokeswoman said: "Extensive medical and forensic testing is continuing today to ascertain what the substance is and whether it caused or contributed to Alia's death."

Yousef was arrested when the child's body was found at about 5.30pm on Saturday.

A post-mortem examination failed to determine how Alia died.
