Birmingham is the Champagne capital of the country, according to a survey of alcohol sales between Christmas and New Year.

Figures released by Tesco show that its stores in Birmingham before New Year's Eve sold more Champagne and fine wines than any other outlets in the UK. The analysis uncovered some surprising regional variations.

Bristol led the way in overall sales of alcohol, with rum outselling all other spirits in the city. Tesco regional sales figures also show demand for Champagne in the city rose 22 per cent compared with last New Year's Eve, while sales of beer soared by 17 per cent and wine has increased by 15 per cent.

Glaswegians buy more bottles of Malibu rum than anywhere else, Cheltenham created the biggest demand for whisky and tequila proved most popular in Bournemouth.

Tesco Beer Wines and Spirits Category Director Dan Jago said: "The map of what's been selling in the run-up to New Year's Eve is interesting because it dispels quite a few regional stereotypes.

"Whoever would have thought that Malibu would be a best seller in Glasgow or that tequila would be the tipple of choice in Bournemouth?

"It is also interesting to note that Bristol looks set for some lively parties. Elsewhere, Birmingham is where the highest Champagne and fine wine sales can be found and vodka is the top selling spirit in Cardiff."

Other regional figures for the last two weeks reveal the most Guinness has been bought in Liverpool, Leicester's favourite tipple is cider and absinthe is a best seller in Brighton.

Lager leads the way in Watford and the top brandy buyers are in Newcastle.
