Daniel Evans, one of the brightest prospects in British men’s tennis, has had his funding suspended for partying late into the night just hours before he was due to play in doubles match at Wimbledon.

The 18-year-old from Hall Green was seen in a nightclub in Wimbledon town centre at 3am on the day he and doubles partner Dan Smethurst lost in the second round of the boys event without winning a set.

As a result Evans, who reached the third round of the singles event, will receive no support from the Lawn Tennis Association for four months, while Smethurst, from Oldham, will not get any for two. Evans’s penalty, a record for the LTA, is higher because there was more than one incident of unprofessional conduct.

That means he will get no funding for UK or overseas tournaments, no wild cards into Futures tournaments, will not be able to practise at the National Tennis Centre and will not be endorsed for overseas championships such as the US Open.

Even worse Evans will not be given any coaching by his mentor Paul Annacone for the duration of his punishment. Annacone guided Pete Sampras to the top.
