A minicab driver who raped and sexually humiliated a university student after picking her up in Birmingham city centre has been jailed for 12 years.

The judge who passed sentence on the driver was told how his victim's life had been completely devastated by what had happened and of her suicide attempt after visiting the scene of the rape.

Mohammed Shabir, 36, of Sherbourne Road, Balsall Heath, who was found guilty of two charges of rape and two other sex offences, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Judge Howard Morrison, sitting at Birmingham Crown Court, said: "This was a serious and sustained sexual assault culminating in a vile act of sexual humiliation on a young and vulnerable female who trusted you to take her safely home. It was therefore a gross breach of trust.

"Girls, their friends and families are entitled to trust those who drive taxis to keep them safe and do what they can to protect them and you betrayed that trust in the worst possible way."

In a victim impact statement, the student said her whole world had collapsed around her.

"I have nightmares virtually every night when different parts of the incident have been replayed, although I never see his face. I do not think I have had a proper night's sleep since this incident."

She said the attack had badly affected her studies and she did not feel she could go into Birmingham, especially at night.

"The man violated me. He has ruined my life."

Her father said she had taken an overdose of various tablets after going back to the scene and was receiving psychiatric treatment.

Michael Burrows QC, prosecuting, said after going out the victim and two of her friends had phoned Ambassador Cars for a taxi to pick them up outside the Jam House. Shabir, the driver, had dropped her two friends off but then missed the turning for the woman's home.

After being told to get in the front seat, the victim became increasingly concerned, at one point sending a text SOS message to a friend.

Mr Burrows said Shabir stopped the vehicle on a number of occasions and after indecently assaulting the woman then raped her in the car park of the Priory Club in Edgbaston. She repeatedly told Shabir to stop before fleeing from the car and hiding in bushes.
