The new-look tabloid Birmingham Post and its printers have scooped major honours at a newspaper industry award ceremony.

The morning paper was highly commended in the Regional Newspaper of the Year category at the prestigious Newspaper Awards run by the Production Journal magazine.

The Post was praised by judges for its ‘‘new modern feel and compact style’’ following last October’s relaunch.

Although concentrating on production values, the award also recognises excellence in news reporting and what a newspaper does in terms of features, campaigns and championing local causes. An increase in circulation, in the difficult economic climate of the last few months, was also highlighted.

Trinity Mirror Printing, based at the Fort Dunlop site in Erdington where the Post, along with sister titles the Birmingham Mail and Sunday Mercury, is printed was also highly commended in the Environmental Newspaper Company category.

The success comes during a time of major change for the Birmingham Post, with the switch from broadsheet to tabloid, an increased focus on business news, a rapidly growing internet and multi-media presence and a move to new Fort Dunlop offices.

Editor Marc Reeves said: “There has been a revolution at the Birmingham Post over the last year, both behind the scenes and in the product hitting the newsstands and website each day.

“It is testament to the dedication and professionalism of all staff that we continue to produce an award-winning newspaper during this period of upheaval.”
