A memorial service for former Birmingham City Council leader Sir Richard Knowles will be held at St Philip’s Cathedral on Monday.

The service of thanksgiving for his life and work will take place at 11am will be conducted by the Dean of Birmingham, the Very Revd Robert Wilkes, in the presence of the Bishop of Birmingham, the Rt Revd David Urquhart.

Members of the public are invited to attend and should be in their seats by 10.45 am.

Sir Richard’s son, William Knowles, will be among the family attending the service and will give a tribute to his father.

City dignitaries present will include the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Coun Randall Brew, and council leaders.

Sir Richard, who died in February aged 90, was a city councillor from 1972 and Labour council leader from 1984-1993, during which time he oversaw the building of Symphony Hall and the International Convention Centre.  He was Lord Mayor in 1994-1995.
