A Birmingham man caught in possession of a loaded firearm and a drugs at his home has been jailed for five years and five months.

John Shorthouse, aged 51, from Yardley Wood, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court after being found guilty of possession of class A and class B drugs, and for possessing an illegal firearm.

His arrest followed a search carried out by police in Cleeve Road, in January. Officers found a large amount of cannabis, unprescribed Diazapan and a loaded sawn-off shotgun with ammunition.

Officers also discovered various items which suggested cannabis cultivation had taken place at the address.

Sergeant Gayle Trowman, from the Billesley neighbourhood team, said: “We carried out this warrant as a direct result of information received from the community.

“As a result a dangerous firearm has been recovered and the offender has received a substantial prison sentence.

“I would like to thank the local community for their continued support and reiterate that we will continue to act on the issues that matter to them, whether that is anti-social behaviour or parking issues to drug dealing and firearms."

Anyone with concerns about drugs or with information to assist the police is urged to ring 0345 113 5000, or contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
