A football fan who assaulted another man after watching England's opening World Cup match in a Birmingham bar is starting a six-month jail term.

West Midlands Police are now liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service to obtain a football banning order against 20-year-old Jamie Gallett.

Gallett, of Tustin Grove, Acocks Green, was jailed at the city's Magistrates' Court after admitting affray.

Officers arrested Gallett - who had been drinking in the Broad Street area - in Digbeth following England's 1-1 draw with the USA.

CCTV operators spotted him assaulting another man in High Street, Digbeth, before shouting abuse at a kebab shop owner as friends tried to drag him away.

Detective Constable Michelle Hussey, who was involved in the inquiry into the incident, said: "The sentence and speed with which it was imposed reflects the seriousness with which we treat this type of crime.

"It is also worth mentioning that his friends did try in vain to stop him offending. Because he wouldn't listen he will now miss the whole World Cup."

West Midlands Police, who have pledged to seek football banning orders against those involved in World Cup-related disorder, praised the vast majority of England supporters in the city for taking the stalemate against the USA in their stride.

Inspector Howard Lewis-Jones said: "The fans were superb after the USA match despite their understandable disappointment."

But he admitted: "The real test will come as the games have more at stake and, heaven forbid, England are knocked out. We do want to remind fans that we are experienced in dealing with disorder and will come down hard on anyone involved - for the good of all decent supporters."
