A man has appeared before a district judge in Birmingham charged with inciting young girls to engage in sexual activity on the internet.

Paul Wilson, who is alleged to have committed offences against more than 20 girls living in England and Wales, spoke only to confirm his name and age during a brief hearing at Birmingham Magistrates' Court.

The defendant faces a total of 43 charges of taking, making and distributing indecent images, and of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The alleged offences relate to more than 20 girls aged between 12 and 15 and are said to have been committed between May 2008 and January this year.

Wilson, whose address cannot be published for legal reasons, was ordered to appear at Birmingham Crown Court next week.

The 20-year-old was not required to enter pleas to any of the charges and there was no application for bail on his behalf.
