Ben Foster is all smiles as he faces the TV cameras at West Bromwich Albion.

Sitting next to him is Roy Hodgson, with Zoltan Gera on the other side of the table.

On the one hand Foster is happy to be on a season-long loan at Albion, a club which finished 11th last season.

On the other he’s unhappy at the mess he has left behind at Blues.

Wolves (Roger Johnson), Villa (Alex McLeish) and now Albion have each taken a piece from Blues’ spine.

And Foster feels sorry for the Blues fans.

He believes they deserve answers from the club's hierarchy, not least over the mid-to-long-term future.

“I made no secret of how much I enjoyed it at Birmingham,” said Foster. “The fans were fantastic, they had some good players and I have a lot of friends within the club.

“What people forget is that it’s not only the players who have to be sold but other people behind the scenes who lose their jobs.

“It’s something a lot of the fans are worried about.

“They need answers and have been through the club thick and thin.

“What’s worrying is that there aren’t many answers coming out.

“So many people left in pre-season training - it’s massive change and it’s one thing that does come along with relegation.

“You see West Ham and Blackpool and they have kept onto their star players, but it wasn’t case at Blues. I am worried for Blues. I don’t think any one knows the facts though and hopefully it will clear itself up.”

The Leamington-born goalkeeper continued: “I am surprised how things went.

“We knew that relegation would mean players leaving but for it to go the way it did is gutting for the fans.

“You see players who have gone and for the amount they have gone - sadly that’s the way it is.

“Clubs around us know we’re in trouble so obviously won’t offer stupid money for us.

“The fans have been disappointed with the players who have left and the amount they left for is a double blow for everyone.”
