Dear Editor, For the past 12 years, this Government has persistently refused to support or fund plans for major infrastructure projects submitted by our region.
Despite impressive benefit-to-cost ratios, and with good business cases firmly established, investment not immediately destined for London and the South East has regularly bypassed Birmingham on its way to more favoured cities in the North.
The possibility of granting of City Region Status provided the Government with an opportunity to redress the balance and show a commitment to the region beyond repeated unfulfilled promises.
The Government encouraged the Birmingham bid – the one alternative means of accessing long-awaited funding – only to confer the status, with all its attendant benefits, on two smaller northern cities.
We now have a situation where the Government will neither fund, nor allow the region to fund, major infrastructure projects which have been urgent throughout its 12 years in office.
Our Labour MPs should be furious that their Government has let down our region yet again. If they fail to exert the necessary pressure on ministers to break this increasingly debilitating deadlock, they will deserve to be wiped out at the next election.
