A Birmingham couple have been cautioned by police after falsely claiming they had been the victims of crime and had their mobile phones stolen.
The 32-year-old man and 38-year-old woman, from Erdington, told officers that their mobile phones had been stolen while they were shopping at The Fort Shopping Centre.
Detectives launched an investigation but soon discovered that the claims were false after viewing CCTV which disproved the pair's versions of events. Analysis of the phones confirmed that the pair were making a false report.
Sergeant David Jagger from Birmingham North's CID said: "People shouldn't underestimate the consequences of making false claims to the police. No matter what your reason for doing this you could face a range of powers, from cautions to a fine and even possible court cases."
