Garry O’Connor scored the only goal of the game as Birmingham City wrapped up a successful weekend with a 1-0 win at Forest Green Rovers on Sunday.
The Blue Square Premier club held out for 87 minutes before O’Connor struck to give Blues their second victory in the space of just 24 hours following on from their 2-0 win at Gillingham on Saturday.
It also keeps Alex McLeish’s men undefeated during their pre-season campaign.
With a five-man battle under way for the starting positions in Blues’ attack for the opening game of the season on August 9, O’Connor’s goal was timely after Cameron Jerome netted in Saturday’s win in Kent.
Central defender Martin Taylor was also on target but it was his veteran namesake in goal, Maik, who kept out the Championship side with an assured display.
The fact that he was made to work hard on a hot day suggests that those in front of him weren’t pulling their socks up.
Martin Taylor did keep the impressive Simeon Jackson under wraps but the out-of-favour Franck Queudrue regularly gave the ball away and almost scored an own goal.
“The first 30 minutes was particularly good, we went two goals up and seemed to take our foot off the pedal and I thought there was a wee bit of slack in terms of possession and retention of the ball,” added manager McLeish.
“It wasn’t nearly the standard that I would be looking for at this club but in saying that we faced a solid side and they had far too many shots on goal for my liking.
“We’ve got to keep the ball better, we were good on tour in Austria at that and if we can do it against them, we can do it in England.
“Maik’s looking very sharp and he made some good saves particularly one near the end. A lot of the other ones you would expect him to save but there was still too many shots for comfort so we will look at that and tighten things up a wee bit.”
Marcus Bent, who was added to Blues’ forward options after hisn signing last week, made his first start and lasted just over an hour. Apart from a brief scare when the new boy took a little while to get up from a blocked shot in the second-half, the well-travelled striker looked lively.
Blues’ next pre-season fixture comes on Tuesday evening when McLeish takes his side to the Walkers Stadium to face League One Leicester City.
