Birmingham City University is attracting first-time students at four times the UK average.

Student applications for the former University of Central England have jumped by more than 30 per cent compared to last year – the biggest increase in student interest in the region and one of the largest leaps in the UK.

Figures released by the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS) revealed that the number of school-leavers who applied for a full-time undergraduate course at UK universities and colleges up to January 15 had risen by 33,678 to 464,167, an increase of 7.8 per cent.

But figures released by Birmingham City University showed that applications in the past year soared by an unprecedented 34.2 per cent.

In total, 18,792 people applied for full-time degrees and other courses at the Perry Barr-based university.

Secretary and Registrar Maxine Penlington said: “The figures from UCAS prove that the university is fast becoming the first choice for students who value a professional and practice-based education.”
