Thousands of Birmingham bus-users will be having their journeys altered from today (Monday) as part of a major revamp of city transport facilities.

Stops for 11 services are being shifted as part of the Birmingham City Centre Interchange project.

Carrs Lane closes with all bus services that previously stopped there being moved to nearby Albert Street and Dale End.

Bosses at West Midlands transport authority Centro said the move would allow for gas main replacement and bus stop upgrades as work begins on six new interchanges around the city centre for bus passengers.

The new interchanges will see new bus shelters and bus information points.

Centro boss have organised a series of exhibitions to show off their plans.

A Centro spokesman said: “The project is one of a number of major building schemes that will transform transport in the city.

“We apologise in advance for any disruption but once complete the results will be a bus system that will meet the needs of passengers in the 21st century.”

The bus interchange project is scheduled for completion in late summer this year and will see the introduction of six bus interchanges around the city centre, paving the way for when the Midland Metro tram extension from Snow Hill to New Street station opens in 2015.

A Centro exhibition takes place on Monday next week, Thursday, March 22, and Tuesday, April 17, at the High Street loading bay by Marks and Spencer, 10am to 6pm.

Further exhibitions are planned for Saturday, March 10, Saturday, April 14, and Saturday, April 28, at the markets, in Edgbaston Street, from 9.30am to 3pm.

They also take place on Thursday, March 15, at Chamberlain Square, behind the Town Hall, from 11am to 3pm and on Wednesday, April 25, in Victoria Square from 11pm to 3pm.

Services affected by the closure of Carrs Lane are the 33, 51, 55, 72, 94, 907, 934/A, 935/A, 997, 952 and the X51.
