The Birmingham Brummies speedway team has secured its long-term future in Perry Barr  in what the club owner has called its "biggest result".

They have raced their motorbikes around the Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium on Wednesday nights and occasional weekends since 2007, under temporary planning permission.

But city planners, full of praise for the club which won the National Premier League Four Team Tournament title this season, have now made the arrangement permanent, meaning the club can plan for years ahead.

Owner Tony Mole was delighted with the outcome and promised further investment in the team and facilities.

He said: “It is a great result for us, probably our biggest. ‘We can now carry out some long term planning and will look at improving the spectator facilities.”

Mr Mole was joined by a more than a dozen Brummies’ supporters, wearing the team’s red and yellow colours, at Thursday's planning committee meeting. They cheered as the club received unanimous support.

Coun Mike Sharpe (Lab, Tyburn) said: “This club has enhanced Birmingham’s reputation as a sporting city and I am really pleased we are able to give them some certainty.

"They have also done a lot of work with local youngsters and should be congratulated.” Coun Keith Linnecor (Lab, Oscott) who added: “They bring visitors into this city who use our local shops.

‘‘I hope they can go from strength to strength.”

The club now has a more flexible arrangement to include a switch to Thursday night race meetings if new promoters or the league requires it.

There is also a pledge to install silencers on the bikes by the start of the 2013 season in a bid to alleviate a handful of complaints about the engine roar.

Opposition from the neighbouring Birmingham City University, which claimed the noise would disturb students, has meant that the club has so far only been allowed temporary consent for racing.

No-one from Birmingham City University was immediately available to comment.

* Birmingham Brummies' next fixture is against King's Lynn at Perry Barr this Sunday, August 29, at 6.30pm.
