The Carling Academy, in Birmingham, is to increase its audience capacity from 2,700 to 3,000.

Since reopening in November 2000 in Dale End, the venue has long been one of the Academy Music Group’s busiest sites in the country, hosting some 250 shows and 120 club nights every year. Formerly known as The Hummingbird, it had been closed since the mid-90s. Last year the Academy attracted some 600,000 people to its varying events.

Commenting on the expansion, AMG Operations Director Steve Forster said: "Carling Academy Birmingham has always been such a popular venue for customers, promoters and artists and this increased capacity of 3,000 will firmly reinforce its position as the Midlands premier live entertainment venue.

"The range of packages we have in place means that promoters can look to easily upgrade shows when working with newer acts or use our maximum capability to sell to 3,000 for larger artists."

Carling Academy Birmingham has also named its new General Manager as Ian Congdon.
