Who beats Andrew Sullivan? That's the topical inquiry in Midlands junior golf. The answer is far from cut and dried, writes Michael Blair.
Sullivan, from Purley Chase, had two 3&2 wins to reach the semi-finals of the Warwickshire Youths' Matchplay Championship at Sutton Coldfield yesterday. He is favourite to prevail today. But the strength of junior golf in the county is such as to make Sullivan's progress far less than a sinecure.
He must play at his best to reach the final. His rival at 8.30am is Rory Kirwan, who won his last-16 match 3&1 before replicating that score against fancied Sam Foster.
Titleholder Bender Ben Stafford won his last-16 match 4&3 and then beat Daniel Bardsley 3&1.
This morning he meets Dale Marson who equalled the course record with a 65 in the Warwickshire Strokeplay Championship last month. When he met John Banbury yesterday afternoon Marson had a 6&5 victory. Sullivan has got his work cut out.
