Aston Villa midfielder Patrik Berger believes Gareth Barry is being given the "opportunity of a lifetime" by being offered the chance to join Liverpool.
Berger spent seven successful seasons at Anfield and said: "It is Liverpool and if I was in Gareth's position I would go there tomorrow.
"Gareth knows my opinion, we have discussed it. It is the opportunity of a lifetime, in my opinion. I would go there and try it and experience it."
The Czech Republic international, who has hinted he himself will be leaving Villa Park this summer with the view to spending one last season with a so far unnamed Premier League club, added: "Gareth is the heart of our team and it would be a massive challenge for him.
"It would be Champions' League every year and he would be challenging to win trophies every year. It is so different and Liverpool doesn't come after you every year.
"That's why they want him because he had a fantastic season for us and was our main player from the beginning to the end and has played very well for the national team as well. I am not surprised they would like to sign him."
The 34-year-old Berger believes Villa are making progress but concedes the race to break into the "Top Four" will take time yet.
He said: "I think the gap, not just between Villa and the top four but between the rest of the league and the top four, is big.
"To break into the top four would mean spending a lot of money to bring quality players in able for the challenge.
"Everton have tried to do that for the last few years but have managed to do it once. I think it is going to be tough for Villa to do that.
"It will take time and to reach the Champions' League you would need to keep players like Gareth Barry.
"But Liverpool play for trophies every year on every stage - look at the history of the football club."
