A lavish masked ball was staged last night for Princess Beatrice, left, who celebrates her 18th birthday next month.
Guests arrived at Windsor Castle dressed in period clothing from the Victorian era in keeping with the event's theme - 1888.
The year was picked as Beatrice was born at an unusual moment - 8.18pm on 8/8/1988.
Among those who attended the ball were the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Peter and Zara Phillips and the princess' school and family friends.
Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, of Marchesa, said: "The theme was 1888, so we researched the clothing of the year, including its authentic textiles along with draping and composition. Princess Beatrice also had a good idea of what she was looking for. We worked closely with her, incorporating elaborate details in order to produce a finished silhouette that was unique."
When she was born at the private Portland hospital in London, Beatrice weighed 6lb 12oz and shares her name with Queen Victoria's youngest daughter who was born in 1857.
In her first interview the Princess told society magazine Tatler last year that she did not see herself as a "stereotypical princess, so people often expect one thing when they first meet me and I give them another".
She added: "I'm very lucky, I love being who I am and feel very happy with that."
