Lichfield's MP has welcomed Government reassurances about the future of Whittington Barracks.

Michael Fabricant said he had received a letter from the Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram updating him on the situation.

The Conservative MP said the Ministry of Defence does want to move the Army Training Regiment away from Lichfield.

"But the good news is the assurance from the Armed Forces Minister that this will happen only if another military user is found for Whittington Barracks," he said.

"This would seem to quash the fears - for the time being at least - that the site would be used as an asylum centre or for more housing."

Mr Fabricant said it would be April or May before employees and residents knew exactly what the future held for the barracks.

He said: "I will continue to monitor the situation."
