The Governor of the Bank of England returned to the city where he was educated this week to give a talk on the economy.
Sir Mervyn King presented the first in a series of talks titled Wolverhampton Debates at the University of Wolverhampton on Monday and spoke on the topic of ‘Our economic future’.
Sir Mervyn attended Warstones Primary School in the city and Wolverhampton Grammar School, which he also recently visited.
The 64-year-old Aston Villa FC fan was also professor of investment at Birmingham University at the age of 29.
He has been the Governor of the Bank of England since 2003 and is Chairman of the Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Policy Committee.
The talk was organised by Wolverhampton City Council, the University of Wolverhampton and Pat McFadden, Labour MP for Wolverhampton South East.
Simon Warren, chief executive of Wolverhampton City Council, said: “His strong links with Wolverhampton made his thoughts and comments on the local economy all the more absorbing.”
Sir Mervyn was previously Deputy Governor from 1998 to 2003, and Chief Economist and Executive Director from 1991.
He was a non-executive director of the Bank from 1990 to 1991.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton, Professor Geoff Layer, said: “Sir Mervyn’s thoughts on the subject of our economic future were insightful, interesting and thought-provoking.”
