Bryan Robson's recent admission that he is desperate to bolster his defence could lead the West Bromwich-Albion manager to sign Poland centre-back Jaroslaw Bieniuk.

According to sources at the player's club, Amica Wronki, the Baggies have invited the Poland international to undertake a five-day trial at The Hawthorns with a view to a £350,000 move.

Bieniuk, who has won seven caps for his country, has two years remaining on his current contract but has openly admitted that he would consider a move to England to further his career.

Amica officials stressed that negotiations are at only an early stage but Robson is anxious to make three more signings before the new season gets under way.

Amica's vice- president Arkadiusz Kasprzak said: "There has not been a formal offer as such (from West Brom) but we believe it may lead to more talks. We, as a club, have to discuss what is the right thing for us and the player."

Robson has already signed utility player Steve Watson from Everton, midfielder Darren Carter from Birmingham City and goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on loan from Liverpool in the close season.

But he said earlier this week that he still wants to bring in another defender and striker.

With a view to that he is also expecting to find out in the next couple of days whether he can re-sign Kieran Richardson on loan, with the player due to have talks over his future with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Reports also emerged yesterday that Albion have rekindled their interest in Hungarian star Szabolcs Huszti but they may face competition from Rangers, Panathinaikos, and a host of Championship clubs, if they want to take it any further.

Albion were interested in the 20-year-old Ferencvaros player in January, and his representative claimed that the Premiership outfit could come back in for the winger because Huszti, whose compatriot Zoltan Gera has proved a big hit with the Baggies, is now available on a free transfer.

Huszti's agent, Sam Stapleton, said: "Huszti is regarded as the new Gera and it's important to find the right club for him. There is interest from Pana in Greece, as well as Rangers, and West Brom are contemplating following up their January interest.

"There are a few top Championship sides monitoring the situation but we'll see what happens. It's an exciting time for him and he is looking forward to a new challenge."

Huszti scored twice against Scotland in a recent international and could be viewed as a possible alternative to Richardson should the youngster remain in Manchester.

Meanwhile, three of Robson's squad will not feature in the club's two weekend friendlies with Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road and AFC Telford United at the New Bucks Head.

Gera and Junichi Inamoto plus striker Kanu have been given extra time off after featuring in recent internationals for Hungary, Japan and Nigeria respectively.

But one player who will taste his first action for more than six months is Kirkland, who will play at Cheltenham tomorrow.

The 24-year-old former Coventry goalkeeper has been sidelined since undergoing back surgery in January and is keen to have an injury-free season after making only 45 league appearances in four years at Anfield.

Watson and Carter will feature in the game at non-League Telford tomorrow after joining the Baggies earlier in the week.
