Jersey's Elizabeth Cann kept hopes of a first round place at the Yonex All England Championships alive with a convincing win in her opening qualifier.

The 30-year-old overcame a blip in the second game to see off Canadian Anna Rice 22-20 14-21 21-14 in their women's singles contest at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.

Cann now faces Linda Zechiri of Bulgaria tonight for a place alongside Scotland's Susan Egelstaff in the main draw, which begins on Wednesday.

Carl Baxter's bid to qualify in the men's singles ended at the first hurdle as he went down 21-18 24-26 21-16 to Japan's Kazushi Yamada.

The Canadian-born player, twice runner-up at the national championships, survived a match point to take the second game but was overpowered in the third.

Chris Langridge and Jillie Cooper made progress at the expense of Andrew Ellis and Emma Mason in the battle of two Anglo-Scottish mixed doubles couples.

The pair recovered from a poor start to prevail 10-21 22-20 21-9 but the all-English partnership of Dean George and Samantha Ward went out to China's Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei.

Marcus Ellis and Peter Mills reached the qualifying final in the men's doubles by beating Australians Saliya Gunaratne and Chad Whitehead 21-10 21-12.
