Detectives launched an attempted murder inquiry in Shropshire after two people were seriously injured in a suspected arson attack.
A man, aged in his 40s, is in a critical condition while a woman, in her 20s, remains in a stable condition in hospital following the fire at a house in Bucknell, south Shropshire.
Two men were arrested in connection with the incident and are being questioned by police.
More than 40 officers from West Mercia Constabulary are working on the investigation into the blaze at the property in The Square at 8pm on Tuesday night.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Morgan, senior investigating officer, said: "We have launched a large-scale investigation involving around 40 officers into what is being categorised as an attempted murder and arson inquiry."
