Naked rambler Stephen Gough has vowed to continue to walk the 874-mile length of Britain unclothed after he was arrested in the Midlands one month into his latest attempt.

The 46-year-old set out from Land's End with his girlfriend Melanie Roberts, aged 33, and an unnamed male librarian on June 16.

The trio had estimated the challenge would take two months provided they were not arrested.

But they were detained by West Mercia Police officers near Wem in north Shropshire on Monday evening following a complaint from a member of the public and appeared before magistrates in Shrewsbury yesterday.

A force spokesman said: "We went and found these people and asked them to cover up. They refused and were arrested."

Gough and his male companion refused to dress to appear in court and officials were forced to hold a hearing in the custody cells.

All three pleaded not guilty to breach of the peace and the case was adjourned until August.

Gough was arrested 14 times and served two jail terms when he walked naked from Land's End to John O'Groats in 2003 to 2004.

The former marine and his hairdresser girlfriend, both from Bournemouth in Dorset, and their colleague, from Kent, accepted they ran the risk of arrest.
