A man was arrested after a five-hour stand-off in Coventry which led to the seizure of a firearm.

West Midlands Police detained the 41-year-old man in the Allesley area of the city at about 11.30am on Tuesday after trained negotiators were sent to the scene.

A spokesman for the force said: "Officers from West Midlands Police attempted to carry out an arrest warrant on a suspect at an address on Birmingham Road, Allesley, at 6am on Tuesday.

"The suspect, who was wanted having been recalled to prison following an assault allegation, threatened officers and trained police negotiators went to the scene, where they successfully brought the situation to a safe conclusion."

The spokesman thanked local residents for their patience during the police operation, which saw road diversions set up in the local area.
