In an ever-changing technological age, we all rely on the IT sector more and more.
But don’t believe the myths – a route into a career in IT does not have to involve years at university and thousands of pounds in loans.
In fact new opportunities are available right now for young people in the West Midlands, as national training provider, Remit, brings its IT Academy to Birmingham.
Already proven to be successful in the East Midlands, the Academy helps young people to develop their skills in IT, gain nationally recognised qualifications and get paid at the same time.
IT specialist, Plumtree Group, based in Nottingham, was one of the first companies to take on a Remit IT apprentice. The majority of their activity is in the healthcare sector, where it has had huge success. Last year they started to look to develop the business further by taking on an apprentice.
Software Support Engineer at Plumtree, Richard Morris said: “I felt having the mix of someone based in the office, but getting training at the same time would be a big boost to the business.
“I called on Remit to find an enthusiastic young person who could add to our team, and help us build our business further.”
After seeing the vacancy advertised online, Sam Hopwell, now 21, applied and was successfully taken on by Plumtree and Remit’s IT Academy. Sam was fully employed by Plumtree Group from the start of his apprenticeship and now that he is qualified he is looking forward to a long and successful career with the company. He said: “I have had such great support from Richard and the team at Plumtree. The qualification I achieved has not only given me the confidence in my job, but is a great springboard for a successful career in IT. My Remit tutor, Steve, really supported me through my qualification and enabled me to get where I am today. I can’t believe the difference an apprenticeship has made to my life. I’d recommend this route to all young people out there looking for work, or those about to leave school – it’s been a great experience.”
Steve Yardley, Chief Operating Officer at Remit said: “Sam is another great example of just what an apprenticeship can do for young people. He has made the job his own and even introduced a new network management system into the company.
“Sam’s journey is just one of thousands every year who kick start their career with an apprenticeship.”
