Dear Editor, As a retired airline sales manager and having read the “pro lengthen runway” letters to your newspaper from various influential people, may I respectfully bring to your attention that, whilst I endorse their enthusiasm, Birmingham International Airport will never be as big as Manchester’s.
Long-haul carriers such as South African Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas and Malaysian Airways have pulled out of Manchester so why does Birmingham expect to see non-stop services to the west coast of the USA as well as the Far East? Have they been in negotiations with the airlines they hope to entice?
Birmingham has expanded considerably over many years and is a credit to the Midlands. However, I must strongly disapprove of the charge for using luggage trollies as well as the “drop off” parking charge. If Birmingham wants to encourage more passengers, this is NOT the way to go about it particularly with the adverse publicity a year or so ago regarding the security services.
