A father-of-two suffocated his partner and then killed himself in a fireball, police have revealed.
Post mortem findings confirmed that "obsessive" father-of-two Noel Lee murdered 37-year-old Dawn Mansfield before killing himself.
The 40-year-old doused himself and his already-dead victim in petrol before lighting a match in the bedroom of their home in Redditch, Worcestershire.
Police confirmed they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at 10am on Monday in Loxley Close, Church Hill South.
"Post mortem results indicate Dawn Mansfield died of suffocation and her death is being treated as murder," said Acting Detective Chief Inspector Sean Paley, of West Mercia police.
"Noel Lee died from burns sustained during the fire at the address. This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the families of those involved."
Shocked residents in the quiet cul-de-sac yesterday spoke of their horror following the death of the couple, who have two daughters aged 13 and 15.
Ms Mansfield is also believed to have a 19-year-old son from a former relationship.
Marsha Guy, who lives two doors away from the house which was cordoned off yesterday with tape and guarded by uniformed police, said she was good friends with the couple.
"I don't know whether Dawn was having an affair but if she had other men's phone numbers in her mobile, Noel would go spare," she said.
"He was quite obsessive and would easily fly off the handle. They definitely had their problems but they seemed inseparable."
Mrs Guy said she was at home when the fire broke out.
"I heard someone yelling, 'fire, fire'," said the 35-year-old.
"The next thing I knew the fire brigade and police were swarming the place.
"I'm devastated. My daughter is about the same age as the girls and went on holiday with Dawn and them to Wales last year."
An inquest is due to be opened this week.
