A combination of local news and easy listening has helped Ace FM win the new commercial radio franchise for Wyre Forest.

The company, part of Midlands News Association, will start broadcasting in the next few months after Ofcom awarded it the 12 year licence last night.

Ace beat off competition from The Wyre FM and Kidderminster FM.

Keith Parker, chairman of Ace FM, said: "It is tremendous news.

"Now for the hard bit, setting up the station and running it and providing the people of the Wyre Forest, Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport with a quality commercial radio station."

Mr Parker said the company would set up a studio in Kidderminster and would be recruiting local DJs.

It will broadcast music, news and information service for 25 to 54-year-olds in the Kidderminster area.

Mr Parker said: "We will provide a service with a good news element. The radio station is part of Midlands News Association so will be able to tap into those resources, but it will be operated as a separate company.

"It is going to play easy music for our audience of 30 to 55-year-olds, but it will be modern and not old fashioned."

Stephen Hodge, chairman of Kidderminster FM, said: "We are disappointed we have not won the licence, but would like to thank all the local groups who have supported us.

"In a post proposal meeting we felt we lacked a bit of local speech in our proposal."
