A Midland-based cancer charity has appointed a leading Birmingham solicitor as its new chairman.
John James, founder of Birmingham Forward, joins University Hospital Birmingham's Get A-Head charity, which raises money for education and research into head and neck cancer.
He recently stepped down from his post as chief executive of the Mary Stevens Hospice.
"I am delighted to be taking on the role of chairman of Get A-Head and have put together an exciting committee and group of patrons," said Mr James.
"We are all dedicated to helping patients with head and neck diseases, especially those with the cancer and are determined to continue to raise funds to help education, research and purchase of vital equipment, both for University Hospital Birmingham and f or the people of the Midlands."
Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer in Britain, and is largely caused through smoking, alcohol abuse and binge drinking, as well as significant sun exposure.
John Watkinson, vice chairman and consultant ENT/head and neck and thyroid surgeon, said: "Our aim over the next five years is to raise enough money through on-line donations and targeted fund-raising to cut the numbers of this disease."
