Ninety jobs are set to go at a women's hospital in Birmingham as managers try to make savings of #1.5 million.

Cuts are to be made across the board at Birmingham Women's Healthcare NHS Trust as it tries to balance the books.

A spokeswoman said the trust hoped to keep redundancies to a minimum and lose posts through natural turnover.

She said: "We are looking at disestablishing 90 posts across the board. We've ended this financial year on a surplus, which is good news for us.

"The problem is, we face a financial imbalance next year and we need to make a saving of #1.5 million.

"We need to take action and one of the ways we're looking at is disestablishing around 90 posts through reducing hours, taking vacant posts out of the system, retirements and natural turnover. We hope to keep redundancies to a minimum.

"It's unfortunate we have to do this sort of thing, it's a problem nationally."

Asked if the cuts would affect patient care, the spokeswoman said: "We are looking at new ways of working. We're looking at how we can make our services run more effectively. We don't want to affect health care. Our patients come first."

More than 1,500 staff work at the trust, which is one of only two in the UK offering specialist care to women.

According to its website, it is the regional referral centre for fetal medicine, complex gynaecology and obstetrics cases and infertility.
