An elderly man escaped serious injury after a large tree fell on top of the car he was driving in Kings Norton.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Redditch Road, Kings Norton, at around 1.30pm today.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Crews arrived on scene to find a car which had been pinned underneath the tree. The tree was approximately 60ft tall.

“A branch, measuring 2ft in diameter, landed on the bonnet and windscreen of the car.

“The driver of the car, a man believed to be in his 70s, sustained neck pain and was suffering from the effects of shock.

“Crews worked with the fire service at the scene to release the man from the car by removing the side of the vehicle.

"The man was immobilised with a neck collar and spinal board before he was transferred by land ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further assessment and treatment.

“Considering the size of the tree it was remarkable that the man didn’t suffer more serious or even fatal injuries.”
