Birmingham Royal Ballet has received a £2 million funding boost thanks the Cadbury family and the Arts Council.
The money will be used to set up the Cadbury Dance Fellowship in memory of the late Robin Cadbury and Lady Susan Cadbury, who had a keen interest in supporting dance talent during their lifetimes.
It will ensure that up to 40 young dancers a year receive ongoing teaching, training and mentoring.
And it will enhance BRB’s leadership credentials as experts in developing dancers, in community outreach work and in enabling individuals to maximise their creative potential.
The company is heralded as one of the crown jewels in the West Midlands arts scene.
The Cadbury family, who have a reputation for philanthropy and supporting cultural and community life in the West Midlands, have donated £1 million to the fund.
This matched £1 million awarded to the company through the Arts Council’s Catalyst Endowment scheme.
BRB was the only dance company among the 18 named recipients who will share a grant of £30,500,000 to build endowments that will provide an income from the Arts Council’s programme.
Christopher Barron, chief executive of Birmingham Royal Ballet said: “Stimulating philanthropy is a big challenge facing the arts in the UK and is the means by which the great cultural institutions of the UK will sustain themselves and achieve their ambitions.
“Support from the Cadbury family will help BRB promote philanthropy, encourage a re-energised culture of giving in the West Midlands and protect the world-class standards of one of the UK’s leading dance companies, one of the ‘crown jewels’ of the West Midlands cultural scene”
Jayne Cadbury, speaking forhe Cadbury Family, who were recipients of the Carnegie Medal for Philanthropy in 2005, said: “By supporting BRB in this way, the family have come together to ensure the interests that Robin and Lady Susan Cadbury were passionate about are sustained.
The gift reinforces the family’s values and sense of identity and builds on the rich history of Cadbury family philanthropy.
“The Cadbury Dance Fellowship will ensure the family reputation is always associated with excellence and developing talent and always be linked with the creativity of the West Midlands.”
