One of the region’s most high profile businessmen has said he is delighted with the response to a charity gala evening in aid of the Philippines Typhoon Appeal.

Jason Wouhra of East End Foods decided to host the prestigious event on February 22 at the ICC after witnessing the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan, which struck in November.

“We are delighted with the response we have had towards this event, the support we are receiving from our friends, family, local and national businesses has been truly overwhelming, and the generosity and kindness shown we know will make such a positive change to the lives of so many affected by the devastating typhoon in the Philippines,” said Jason.

Mr Wouhra, who is also chair of the Institute of Directors in the West Midlands, said it was hoped to raise £100,000 for the disaster appeal.

“We first started to put this idea together towards the end of last year. My brother and I went to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) in London to discuss how we could help the Philippines. After our meeting we were convinced that this is something we just had to do. We didn’t realise just how much organisation this event was going to take, but the rewards from it are already evident and we are so excited and looking forward to the gala,'' he added.

“As a family we try to do as much as we possibly can to support charitable causes, both at home and abroad, but I have to say that this is the biggest by far that we have embarked on.

“The Filipino community play an important role in the West Midlands. I understand that there are over 14,000 Filipinos in Birmingham and a considerable number work as medical staff in challenging and supportive roles at Birmingham Hospitals and their contribution should be recognised.”

“I would like to thank my family, friends, East End Foods, all those people I have collared to donate prizes or funds to support the event, everyone that has provided services for the event at low cost and the team supporting me pulling this event together. It is amazing how the business community is so cohesive. I am proud of Birmingham and the West Midlands.

“Thank you to everyone who is supporting this worthy cause and I am looking forward to welcoming you all to the ICC on 22 February.”
