Sandwell Council's planning committee has approved plans for a parcel delivery distribution centre on the Vaughan Trading Estate, in Tipton.

An application for a 6,906 square metre building with space for 150 car parking spaces, 135 van spaces and 18 HGV spaces.

The site, in Sedgley Road East, will be operated by DPD and will join the company's large existing depots in Oldbury and Smethwick.

The plans were passed by the borough's planning committee on Wednesday despite concerns by councillors and residents over traffic and noise.

Asking questions about the number of HGVs moving and out of the site, which will operate day and night seven days a week, Cllr Bob Piper said: "I always think about these type applications and what would the good folk of the Royal Borough of Sutton Coldfield think if we proposed to stick something like this in their area?"

Cllr Luke Giles said: "Sedgley Road East is quite busy at peak times and you are now looking at vans coming out every minute."

Cllr Julie Webb added: "The Vaughan Trading site has been used for hundreds of years for industrial use. People are going to be upset by the recommendation."
