Sport-loving gourmands have the opportunity to snap up some original artwork and get a taste of fine food while raising money for children’s charity Acorns, writes Richard McComb.
Groups from Aston Villa Football Club have embarked on an AVFC Beaujolais Adventure to get their hands on the first batch of the 2011 wine, culminating with a special celebratory dinner back in Birmingham.
As part of the event, the club’s official formal wear supplier Harvey Nichols is teaming up with graffiti artist Temper to raise money for the club’s charity partner, Acorns.
Temper, otherwise known as graffiti artist Arron Bird, has designed a bespoke piece of commemorative artwork that will be converted into wine labels for the 2011 Beaujolais bottles. The labels will be signed and applied to an exclusive run of a dozen bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau which the travelling teams, 10 in total, will bring back to Birmingham to be sold at Harvey Nichols store at the Mailbox. Each bottle has a minimum reserve price of £1,000 and comes with a larger signed, framed and numbered version of the artwork.
Buyers can, of course, contribute more if they wish as the proceeds will all go to Acorns, which helps seriously ill children. The bottles and prints will be available to purchase from Harvey Nichols from Saturday (November 19).
Temper has also agreed to donate his original signed wine label artwork to the charity, which fundraisers hope could raise a further £10,000. The bespoke label shows Villa’s Holte End in the background, but instead of a football pitch there is a vineyard. The colours incorporates the club’s famous claret and blue and a large trophy-type vessel is adorned with the club’s emblem, a lion.
Villa fans will also pick out the image of William McGregor on the label. The Scotsman joined the Villa committee in 1877 and went on to hold every office with the club as well as helping to establish the Football League.
The children’s charity is represented by acorns growing on a gnarled vine.
In order to collect the Beaujolais Nouveau, the Villa teams undertook a 1,350-mile round trip to Beaujeu.
The culmination of the fundraiser feat is a dinner at Villa Park’s Directors Suite on tomorrow (November 18), with each course matched with wines from within or near to the Beaujolais region.
