Fancy living underground in a specially designed eco-home?

A parcel of four acres of land is up for auction on a beautiful Shropshire hill which has planning permission for a very unique habitat to be built there.

David Giles, director of Halls, who lives nearby and is handling the sale, said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for someone to build their dream eco home in a fabulous location.

“The views from this land on Hopton Hill are a sight to behold and to be able to live there is a totally unique opportunity.

“You would stand absolutely no chance of getting planning permission for a traditional, above ground home on this site, so that’s why the owner looked at developing an underground home.”

The owner has engaged the services of architects NC Homes of Wilmslow, who recently designed a luxury underground home in Cheshire, which has not yet been built.

The plans for this home include an underground swimming pool with a stainless steel chute from a bedroom, which literally allows the owner to roll out of bed and slide down to the pool.

There are less than 100 earth sheltered homes in the UK, compared to Europe and America, where thousands of people live underground. In Russia there is said to be more development below ground than above it, while Japan and China, where development space is at a premium, are particularly keen to build underground living spaces.

“Many of us watch television programmes like Grand Designs and have seen the exciting possibilities for developing eco homes,” said Mr Giles. “No plans have yet been drawn up for the Hopton Hill eco house, but the buyer of the land could potentially make it as big as he or she likes because it will be hidden from view and it’s on a four acre site with the option to buy another four acres.”

The land is at Hopton Hill, Hopton, Nesscliffe, which is located between the towns of Shrewsbury and Oswestry.

It will be going up for auction on October 9 at Halls Holdings House, Battlefield, Shrewsbury, with a guide price of £150,000.

The additional four acres of land will cost £50,000.

Planning permission was granted by Shropshire Council in July to build an earth sheltered eco house on the land, which has southerly views over picturesque countryside and is shielded by mature woodland.

To the west of the site is Nesscliffe Hill Country Park and Hill Fort and the area is popular with walkers and horse riders.

Viewing is by appointment with Mr Giles at Halls’ Shrewsbury office on 01743 450700.
