Chapel Cottage. It is such a sweet sounding name, conjuring up an image of a quaint little country house with stone to the floor and beams to the ceiling.

This house in Bromsgrove Road, Clent, is not that.

Originally a chapel, it does have two centuries of history behind it, 19th century beams and brickwork, and even the original oak chapel door.

But it has undergone an amazing transformation with an overstated approach to its design and decor.

At its heart is a living room with stepping stone carpeting and an vast central fireplace that wouldn’t look out of place in an alpine lodge. And running throughout is a colour scheme of black, white and gold.

This fantasy house has been put on the market with Andrew Grant.

The drama starts in the reception hallway which is double height and has a galleried landing running round it. The arched chapel door adds a Gothic touch that is complemented by the elaborate wrought iron balcony. The door now leads into a ground floor shower room.

Not one but three glazed doors lead into a stunning kitchen with gloss black units topped by wooden work surfaces and a Lamona gas-fired range cooker.

A central island/breakfast bar has a sink, AEG gas hob and fridge and freezer beneath. A second breakfast bar has a wine fridge beneath. In the food prep area next to the showpiece kitchen there’s an American-style fridge freezer and a dishwasher. A separate utility can house even more white goods. The fantastic open plan sitting room/dining room is ideal for entertaining with doors on to the gardens.

A centrepiece fire with slate and wood surround is open on four sides. Sitting between the lounge and kitchen is a dining area with wooden floor and sliding doors out to a slate chipped courtyard.

The gallery landing leads to four double bedrooms and a box room or nursery.

The master suite is lavish. It has a fitted dressing area with built-in wardrobes and a dressing table, a corner Jacuzzi bath, a sauna and an en suite shower room.

It is well matched by the guest suite, which has a vaulted ceiling, en suite with twin sinks and free-standing bath, and the original oak flooring from the chapel.

The two double bedrooms and the nursery are served by a bathroom that is fitted with a free-standing roll top bath on a plinth, large cubicle with body jet shower, two basins on vanity units, toilet and bidet.

A Victorian spiral staircase leads to a playroom on the second floor which could be used as another bedroom or home office/studio. Outside, a garage features space for cars and for watching movies, as it is complete with a newly fitted cinema room with projector and sound system.

At the end of the house is sunroom which houses a kitchen and bar, seating and dining space. It can be used all year round but comes into its own during the summer when the glazed doors can be folded back, revealing the terrace beyond.

There is a hint of retro glamour to the house which is further emphasised by the kidney shaped swimming pool surrounded by a generous sun terrace. The pool house has a tiled floor and changing area, kitchenette and shower room.
