Solihull is officially the best place to live in England.
It came second to fast-rising Edinburgh in uSwitch’s Quality of Life index, which ranks the best places to live in the UK.
However, that means it is still the top location south of the border.
Property experts believe a combination of proximity to both town and country, and good schools help to set Solihull above the rest.
Will Marshall-Murray, of Fine and Country, told us: “You’ve got the Warwickshire countryside. You are far enough from Birmingham to pop in and then get away from it, and London is just an hour or so away, so it is brilliantly convenient.’’
Then there are the stellar educational establishments.
“Tudor Grange Academy is graded outstanding in all of Ofsted’s criteria,” said Will.
“It is very academic and kids get great results. It is the same with the Arden School in Knowle.
“People do genuinely have the debate with themselves. Should they send their children to a private school or spend an extra £100,000 on a house in the Tudor Grange or Arden catchment where they are getting as good an education.”
According to Rightmove’s figures for recent house sales, the properties fetching the highest sums have been on Widney Manor Road, Alderbrook Road, Lady Byron Lane and Warwick Road, selling for between £950,000 and £1,650,000.
