A Birmingham city centre pub is to get a new lease of life – with a return to its old name.

The City Tavern in Bishopsgate Street has been bought by Davenports Brewery, which will restore it to its former glory and its original name, The Bulls Head.

The Grade II listed, terracotta building on a corner site near Five Ways is only yards from the site of one of Davenports original breweries on Bath Row.

Built in 1901, the interior will be refurbished and it will offer traditional, award-winning cask beers made in Birmingham which have not been seen for many years, including Top Brew Deluxe, Old Ale and Davenports original bitter.

It will also sell craft beers, cocktails, coffee and a grilled food menu.

Davenports brand director Simon Key says: “We are excited to give this great old venue a new lease of life.

“We have a foot firmly in the past with our historic revival cask beers but also want to offer a modern eclectic mix of local, national and international food and drink.”

It’s one of several new ventures Davenports is planning in Birmingham, launching its first new bars in more than 30 years.

It is turning the old HSBC bank in Moseley and units in the Big Peg in the Jewellery Quarter into bars, called Dares after its craft beer brand which was established in the 1920s.

Davenports, founded in Birmingham in 1829, has secured £10 million in investment to widen its ownership of pubs and bars, refurbish its existing property and expand the Smethwick brewery.

Simon adds: “We are soon to be opening brand new venues in the Jewellery Quarter and Moseley, which have been delayed, but we could not wait any longer to bring back an iconic name to the city centre.”
