Wine expert Oz Clarke takes a look at some of the Australian wines that could make an impact in 2011.
With a number of wine regions stretching from the Swan Valley close to Perth to the up-and-coming wineries of the Great Southern, Western Australia has established itself as a food and wine lovers paradise largely due to the exceptional quality local produce which is on offer.
The most famous is Margaret River in the south west.
Blessed with a perfect Mediterranean maritime climate, the area boasts spectacular surfing and swimming beaches, tall timber forests, caves, award winning restaurants and luxurious accommodation as well as top-class wineries.
Drawing on comparisons to France’s Bordeaux in terms of climate and wine styles;the Margaret River has forged its reputation on Cabernet Sauvignon and shiraz in the reds and Chardonnay and Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blends in the whites.
