Property consultancy GVA has been appointed as agent to market a series of new leisure and retail units at the National Indoor Arena (NIA).

The 22-year-old venue is currently undergoing a £26 million programme of works aimed at refurbishing the building by transformation the façade and improving internal public areas.

Due to be completed by the end of 2014, the refurbishment also includes the creation of four new retail and leisure units fronting the canal basin providing 16,500 sq ft of new restaurant and bar space.

GVA director Alastair Robertson-Dunn said: "This is a significant appointment for GVA, particularly given the NIA's profile as a leading national and international venue.

"This will provide significant footfall for these leisure and retail units, particularly given their prominent position on the canalside.

"While our team is based in Birmingham and therefore benefits significantly from an understanding of the regional marketplace, we operate on a national basis, providing the NIA with the best of both worlds when discussing letting prospects with potential occupiers."

The NIA hosts events such as concerts, athletics and family events which attract in excess of one million visitors to the venue each year.
