A second round of funding support for software development companies in the West Midlands has been launched

Creative England, the body responsible for investing and supporting ideas, talent and businesses in film, TV, games and digital media, is inviting applications to its 'GamesLab West Midlands Round 2' fund.

GamesLab is a programme of investment and business support, designed specifically to aid and sustain the games industry.

Birmingham-based software developer Team Football has launched two official World Cup football games after receiving funding support through Creative England's 'Greenshoots' programme aimed at start-ups working with smart phones and tablets.

Jaspal Sohal, Creative England's head of games and digital media, said: "We expedited the second round of our GamesLab fund in the West Midlands because there's still so much talent in the region that we want to capture and support.

"The heart of Creative England and GamesLab is all about seeing ideas come to life and businesses grow.

"We have worked with many established and fresh games developers to help them reach their commercial and creative potential, committing over £500,000 so far to the flourishing games industry outside of London.

"We know there are more studios like Team Football out there who could be doing amazing things and we want to be there to give the support and opportunities they need to make this step."

This round of funding will offer grants of between £4,000 and £25,000 for the development of a commercial game on console, desktop or mobile platforms.

Both established and emerging games developers can apply and the deadline is June 29.
