A Cornish company which produces clue-packed booklets for families to enjoy guided walks around the UK has seen sales jump more than 100% as Britons opt for staycation breaks.

Truro-headquartered Treasure Trails said the huge increase in business is down to families seeking out new ways to safely explore the great outdoors.

The rise in staycations, as well as an increase in people looking for safe alternatives to traditional summer days out, and even holidays abroad, has seen a surge in interest with sales in July more than 100% up on the same month last year.

Aaron Hutchens, general manager of Treasure Trails, said: “With ongoing concerns about visiting busy visitor attractions and travelling too far from home, Treasure Trails offer a cost-effective, fun and socially-distanced solution.

“Getting outside into the fresh air is incredibly important for wellness and mental health, especially in these uncertain times.

“A trail is the perfect way to enjoy a fun, challenging and great value activity with the benefit of discovering something completely new about a destination – even in your own hometown.

“One trend we have been seeing post lockdown is that people are tending to opt for more of the smaller towns or rural Trails as opposed to those within city centres.”

The Truro-based company has grown from a ‘bedroom business’ with a handful of Trails in Cornwall and Devon in 2008 to over 1,200 nationwide today with themes including Spy Trail, Murder Mystery and Treasure Hunt.

The trails are described as an imaginative way to discover hidden secrets in towns, cities, villages and rural locations across the UK with a self-guided themed walk.

Treasure Trails have entertained more than two million people since 2005. Lasting about two hours, the aim is to solve clues on a circular route of approximately two miles incorporating plaques, signs, statues, monuments, images, engravings or any other unique or eye-catching features.

Designed to appeal to all ages, Treasure Trail booklets are suitable for up to five people and also available to buy online and download to print at home, and therefore can remain completely contactless.
