Whale Tankers of Solihull, one of the few British manufacturers not in retreat, has added a £1 million contract to its fast growing order book.

The company has been signed up to supply GE TIP Tanker Services with 20 vehicles.

The order is one of the most diverse undertaken by Whale and involves vehicles of three different specifications based on Scania and Volvo truck chassis.

They will be built at Whale's ten-acre Ravenshaw site, which employs more than 180 people who own 21 per cent of the company.

To be delivered over the next three months, the highly specified vehicles will be joining the GE hire fleet, which operates out of Coalville, Leicestershire, Knottingley, West Yorkshire, Avonmouth, and Liverpool. The company is part of the US-based General Electric group which employs 300,000 worldwide.

Whale Tankers managing director Mark Warmington said: "We have regularly supplied GE with vacuum tankers but we are particularly delighted to be able to meet their diverse specification requirements in this substantial order."
