With Birmingham named as a ‘start-up hotspot’ this week we take a look at ten of the companies carving a bright future in the city's emerging digital technologies.

The StartUp Britain report, released on Monday, drew on last year’s Companies House data to assess where new firms were being established.

Birmingham led the table outside London with 16,281 companies registered. This compared to Manchester, second place, with 11,765 start-ups and Glasgow, which saw 8,085 new companies.

The report comes as the city’s entrepreneurial sector will soon be boosted by the formation of Selr8r, a new ‘start-ups finishing school’, based in the co-working space at Boxxed in Digbeth.

Billed as the world’s only sales accelerator programme, Selr8r is backed by entrepreneur Sean O’Sullivan, managing director of venture capital firm SOSventures, which invests in start-up companies across the globe, primarily in the technology sector.

The programme, which is currently open for applications, starts in April. It will help fledgling companies to achieve sales targets by inviting them to spend 50 days with a number of influential mentors – including O’Sullivan, Australian entrepreneur Bill Liao and Start-up Coach at SOSventures Alan Clayton – to help transform them into higher value, credible ventures.

Mr Clayton said: “Birmingham is one of the most exciting and creative cities to set up and expand a business.

“From the spring, this new programme will see us put ambitious start-ups through their paces in a high intensity boot camp, giving them the ability to convert interest into impressive sales.

“By undertaking a comprehensive review of their business models, customer profiles and marketing messaging, we hope to develop the city’s next set of thriving companies.”
